Fixer Upper- Week Five

Progress has been slow lately as all of our kids’ activities have been picking up.  That’s right.  Upon this writing we have:

Four kids

Two houses

One dog

One Fixer Upper truck

Two kids in soccer

One in dance

One in baseball

And one soccer coach

Two kids in piano/guitar

One full-time job that earns money

One full-time job that does not

Two part-time jobs that earn money

Oh, and we have a life

That totals a ton of insanity.  How do we do it?  Not very well.  But we’re managing.  So there are times when work comes to a halt.

Today I’ll show you some after pictures of my paint job.  And know that we have been making a ton of purchases for the new home.  As the designer, that means tons of decisions made by me.  I really enjoy this part.  And I totally feel for those of you who have built new homes.  Without having some experience at this, it would be really difficult to make such decisions!

Here is the master bedroom all painted up.  This was BM Owl Gray.  It has blue/green undertones.

I was still trimming when I took this shot.  Clearly it’s going to look a little better without all of the tools in it.  🙂

Now on to the kitchen.  In the kitchen I have a little surprise.  Remember when we opened up the wall between the kitchen and living room?  We did a little something special with that opening.

Do you like that opening?  I had an idea on framing that opening with some beams.  They are from the outdoor section at your local home improvement store.  These are made of cedar, as you do not want treated lumber in your interior.  And I stained them Minwax Jacobean Stain.  For some reason I did not take any pictures of that process.  I must have been in a hurry!

I may be biased but I think they turned out lovely.  It draws your attention to that space and makes it beautiful instead of boring.

Fixer Upper- Week Four

This week some fun things began to happen.  As the designer of this place, I had to make my paint color choices!

I’ve been through my mount of paint swatches 100 times and spent some time on Pinterest looking at different rooms and paint colors.  (If you’d like to follow my Pinterest sounding board, it’s called Fixer Upper under me- Style from the Sticks.)  I wanted to do the whole and house in shades of grey. Cue 50 Shades snarky comment.

Here are the colors I picked.  Sometimes they are hard to read on a computer screen. BTW, I’m in love with Benjamin Moore paint colors.  I don’t know why but I love them SO much more than Sherwin Williams or anywhere else.  They’re so much more livable. Just my opinion.

Swatches

Classic Gray- This is a Ben Moore paint that I liked because it is a true grey without too many undertones and it is very light.  This is the paint I chose for the entry, living room, kitchen and hallway.  I wanted to make the space there feel more open, larger and like one big room.  And this neutral will go with many different colors.

Silver Strand- This is one of Joanna Gaines’ favorite colors so I had to try it out somewhere. I chose to make this the bathroom color because it has a bunch of green in it and I didn’t want anything else to have that much color.  It’s from Sherwin Williams.

Decorator’s White- This BM paint will be my trim color.  It’s a very bright white but has a cool undertone that I’m hoping will pop the white accents.

Gray Owl- Another BM.  This grey has a slightly green/blue undertone.  It is the master bedroom color.

Revere Pewter- From BM.  You’ll see this color show up again and again on Pinterest.  It’s a muddy grey which makes it very desirable.  If any of you locals want to see it in person, it’s the grey color on the city library walls.  I picked this for the second bedroom to make the northeast room more cozy and warm.

So that’s the palette!  I hope to get some finished pictures up soon!

Fixer Upper- Week Three

This week was demo week.  And for that we called in some recruits.  Thanks to my brother and my dad for bringing in some muscle to this messy job!

Here are the kitchen cabinets coming out.

They tried to haul away this little lovely to the dumpster but I save it.  It’s the old bathroom vanity.  I have big plans for its future!

No more carpet!

Here’s the old flooring stacked up to be used again somewhere.

This is a coat closet at the top of the stairs.  I had an idea for this space too.  A little demo on the other side and it’ll be half a pantry/half coat hanging space.  (More on that later!)

This kitchen definitely needs more storage!

Now that the demo is 90% done, the real work begins!
